A true garden mood board is NOT just another Pinterest board.
🗞️ This workshop will go far beyond the “idea generation” you may have already done and give you the blueprints to a clear, specific and implementable vision for your unique home sanctuary that looks like you, feels like you and that you’ll be excited to spend time in every single day.
💐 If you’re anything like me, you fall in love with every single plant you see at the garden center. I want to take them ALL home with me and tuck them into my landscape here and there.
📸 But a design is much stronger with a clear vision for your space. And without that vision, squeezing plants into already full garden beds only makes matters worse.
🌳 Have you ever been through this? You buy a bunch of stuff for your garden, plant it, and then hate it. You buy a gorgeous new shrub, spend the afternoon planting it, and then realize, darn-it, it's way too close to the walkway. So now you're huffing and puffing as you dig up the beast. Every day feels like a constant battle; plant lover vs. unruly garden.
❄️ The snow is melting, spring is coming and you look outside, wondering if you have yet another spring and summer of NOT fully enjoying your outdoor space. Yet, when you close your eyes and try to envision what you want, all you can see are endless images of pretty things that don't have any cohesive vision. Even if you’ve tried to implement your ideas, they don't make sense and never turn out like you thought.
🌻 Maybe you bring someone along with you to the garden center, hoping they’ll stop you from spending a gazillion dollars on nine more plants that you have zero space for? Filling your space with more plants than we have room for feels good (in the moment). Then, it looks more cluttered than it does beautiful because there's no clear vision to tie the space together. There’s always this “nagging feeling” that it’s not enough.
🏡 If you don’t know where to get started with your landscaping… this workshop is where you start (yes, even before you start picking plants).
“I think working through the Garden Statement was so enlightening! Especially defining a purpose for a garden - that was an eye-opener for me." -Deb W.
☕️ Imagine you're in your bathrobe and slippers, sipping your morning coffee on your new handpicked porch swing, surrounded by your favorite flowers and the sound of the water in the stream that you had put in. Instead of putting it off as another dream for another year, what if this is the year that you actually did it?
🖼️ Instead of getting lost in all of the ideas that never felt possible, you’re now moving on to the fun part: getting to design your landscape in a way that 100% vibes with your own personality and style. With a garden mood board in your back pocket, you’ll have your vision laid out on paper whenever you need and to pass along to anyone who needs it. Your decisions will feel clear and you (or your landscaper) will know exactly what to do and what materials to buy to make your dream garden a reality.
🏪 Because you have a vision in place, every time you walk into the garden center you know exactly what you’re looking for. And, when any distraction catches your eye, you pull your mood board out of your pocket and instantly you’re back on track. You save a boatload of money, purchasing only the things you need. And it always feels like enough.
🍽️ Plus, you will have a space that you feel a lot of pride in. You’ll be excited to either spend time in it yourself or finally host that dinner party for your friends and loved ones. A feeling of pride and gratitude will swell over you when a morning walker asks you if they can stop and smell your flowers or snap a photo next to your Zen buddha fountain.
🍷 After a long day, you’re looking forward to grabbing a cup of coffee (or glass of Pinot) and stepping outside to your backyard oasis; a space that accurately reflects the vision you had from the beginning. All of the stress from the day just melts from your shoulders as your fingers graze the dragonfly wind chime your grandmother left to you. You stroll along your garden path admiring the colors, scents and the buzzing activity; completely in AWE that the garden YOU created feels so alive. All because it started with your unique vision.
Whether this is your first time putting a seed in the ground or you’ve been gardening with your parents your whole life, this workshop is a great fit for you.
Once you go through the process of defining your unique garden style and creating a mood board, you’ll know what vibe you want your garden to have.
You’ll know what types of furniture to use.
You’ll know what hardscape materials and structures speak to your personal style.
You’ll know what colors and what plants will fit into your vision.
Nothing keeps a gardener more stuck than having lots of great ideas and absolutely no idea how to bring it all together.
As a designer, there's definitely a process that I follow for this. It helps me to quickly gather and organize all of my ideas into a unique and beautiful garden oozing with personality and unique touches... instead of looking like a mish-mash of random things plunked here and there in a yard.
Even if you're not a designer, having a process to make sense of your ideas and discover what you really, truly want for your garden is essential.
The easiest way to achieve this at home is by creating a mood board. Its a simple photo collage that will express the look, feel and personality of your space.
Mood boards are a great way to get a visual picture of how different ideas you have will work together in your garden space. It can help you decide on the colors, materials, focal points, plants and style of your garden. It's a super helpful exercise for visual people like us !
You can create a mood board on a big old piece of poster board with magazine clippings. Or even use a computer program to gather your thoughts and ideas and lay them out on a page.
Get instant access to the recordings when you purchase. Leave the workshop with a printable mood board tucked into your back pocket that represents your clear garden vision (i.e. it’s a real piece of paper containing your organized ideas). Use your mood board to DIY your garden or hand it over to a professional to finally make your dream oasis a reality.
"While my vegetable gardening has been highly functional and productive, I was dissatisfied with my garden’s lack of cohesion and beauty. Your well organized material made it so easy to think about a huge subject and made it approachable and easy to understand. I'm feeling confident and very satisfied with the workshop." -Darlene H.

“What if I’m a complete beginner and need help choosing plants? Or what if I’m not tech savvy and need hands-on support?”
So glad you asked!
Here is what this workshop will NOT cover:
"I felt like I was missing something in my preliminary native garden design. All the mechanics were there: the basemap, the plant list, and a preliminary design, but it was missing a spirit or feeling. I hoped that by creating a mood board, the purpose of the garden would become more evident.
Creating the mood board helped me to 'see' the potential for the garden to be more than just a wildlife habitat. What it was missing was me! How did I (and my family and friends) fit into this new garden space." -Deb W.
My name is Amy and I'm the founder of Pretty Purple Door. I've been a garden designer since 2014 and graphic designer since 2005. I help garden lovers design beautiful landscapes that are colorful in all four seasons, show off your personality and suit your lifestyle.
My work has been featured in publications like The Family Handyman, Buzzfeed, Country Living Magazine and more.
In my Design Your 4-Season Garden course, I teach the exact framework I use when designing gardens for myself and/or clients. This framework will you the skills you need to confidently create a dream garden that's uniquely you. It's really fun and makes designing a garden a lot less stressful!
It wasn't always like this for me, though. I struggled a lot and nearly gave up on my dream garden. But once I figured out this step-by-step system, everything clicked for me. Now, gardening has become such an amazing creative outlet for me. I know it's a hobby that will reward me for the rest of my life... and I want this for you, too. So, I'd love it if you'd join me inside!
In the Mood Board workshop, you’ll be developing your garden style and choosing some backbone elements and structures for your landscape. This is a very small part of the Design Your 4-Season Garden course, which covers my framework for designing a 4-season garden.
Basically, the workshop covers 1/2 of one module of the course (the backbone section). There’s 8 modules in my signature course. Your mood board will get you started with designing your dream garden, but will not provide you with any planting plans or plant recommendations.
My Design Your 4-Season Garden course will take you step by step through choosing the plants in your garden beds so that it blooms all year long and so that the garden beds you’ll be designing will make sense and flow together throughout your entire landscape. My course provides some planting layouts and teaches you HOW to research the right plants for YOUR landscape.
While my signature course provides a framework to guide your plant choices, I do not choose any plants for my students in this workshop or in my signature course. I’ll do my best to answer as many specific questions during the workshop, but I simply won’t have the time to review everyone’s content or help troubleshoot any technical issues.
If you love the Mood Board workshop and want to continue working with me on your garden’s design, you’ll receive a special invitation to join my signature course: Design Your 4-Season Garden.
